What is BIM
BIM is short for Building Information Modeling. The BIM revolution is as big as the transition from paper to CAD. First Architects moved from paper to CAD. Now Architects are moving from CAD to BIM.
Traditionally Architects have had to painstakingly design in a 2D enviroment. The conversion from paper to CAD (Computer Aided Draughting) was initialy a very similar experience, the only difference was that work was now done on the computer. The plan view as well as elevations and sections were typically drawn as non-intelligent "lines". After spending two weeks designing the product on paper, the client decides to make a major change to the original design and the whole draughting process needs to be done again! Changes to the original design can often take longer to be completed than the time spend on the original design.
The Building Information Modeling is an intelligent building enviroment.
There is no need for the designer to allocate or change layers, colours or other basic properties. Work is done in an 3D enviroment. Insert windows and doors from an included library and customizable their appearance and finish to absolutely any preference. In perspectives or elevations doors and windows can be left open to "view" the furniture inside. Need to move the position of a door, window or just an opening? Click and drag the object and they move in real time! Just regenerate the elevation, sections or perspective to see the object in the new position.
Let the BIM solution automatically create your roof with hips and overhang. Work with multiple stories. Create one level and duplicate the entire level as many times as needed. Detail columns, beams or ramps between objects or stories.
Design, detail and draw complicated staircases in seconds! Change a straight staircase to one with a landing into a spiral staircase in seconds! Redraw a staircase with more (or less) stairs in seconds. Change a reinforced concrete design to steel instantly.
Although objects like walls, columns and rc slabs are intelligent 3D objects, they can be modified just like non-intelligent objects. In other words, trim shorter, extend and other basic commands are still usable.
Create elevations or sections in seconds! Design and draw a multi-level structure, detailed with sections and elevations in days, not weeks!
Use your BIM solution to create a Photo Realistic finished and then create a perspective of the strucure to visualize it in real life! Additionally use the animated walkthrough to create a video file of the completed design that can be send to clients and colleages!
Some popular examples of Building Information Modeling solutions are Autodesk's Revit and 4M's IDEA.
